How To Rank On ChatGPT: A Practical Playbook For Brands

How to rank on ChatGPT for brands

You can’t rank on ChatGPT the way you rank on Google, because there’s no list of ten positions to climb. Your brand gets into a ChatGPT answer in one of two ways: the model already knows about you from its training data, or ChatGPT searches the web while answering and cites your page as a source. The second route is the one you can influence quickly.

The practical playbook comes down to six steps. Let OpenAI’s search crawler reach your site. Get your pages indexed in the search results ChatGPT draws on. Publish pages that answer the specific questions buyers ask. Get mentioned on the sites ChatGPT already trusts. Share your product feed if you sell online. Then measure it all with a fixed set of prompts and your analytics. Here’s how each step works, and what to skip.

What Does “Ranking” On ChatGPT Actually Mean?

People use “rank on ChatGPT” for two different outcomes, and they need different work.

Training memory

Live search citation

What happens

The model mentions your brand from what it learned during training

ChatGPT searches the web mid answer and links to your page

When it applies

General questions ChatGPT answers without searching

Questions that benefit from current information, and whenever the user turns on search

What you control

Slowly: how widely and consistently your brand is described across the web

Directly: crawler access, indexing, and whether your page answers the question best

How fast it changes

Only when a new model is trained

As soon as pages are crawled and indexed

Do you get a link?

Usually not

Yes, a cited source the user can click

This article focuses on live search, because that’s where a brand can move in weeks rather than waiting for the next model. The training side still matters, and step 4 covers it, since the same third party mentions feed both.

If you’re new to the wider discipline, our guide to generative engine optimization explains how AI answer engines work across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google.

How Does ChatGPT Pick Its Sources?

OpenAI’s help center says ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information, and that it sometimes partners with other search providers. Its publisher FAQ confirms that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and that it gets URLs both from its own crawler and from third party search providers.

OpenAI doesn’t publish a ranking formula, so the best evidence comes from outside studies. Two are worth knowing, with their limits:

Bing results matter. In a Seer Interactive study of more than 500 citations, 87% of the sources ChatGPT’s search cited matched Bing’s top organic results for the same question, against 56% for Google. That was published in February 2025 with a small sample, so treat it as a strong hint rather than a rule. It does mean a site that’s invisible in Bing is starting behind.

Third party sites get cited a lot. Profound’s analysis of 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025 found Wikipedia was ChatGPT’s most cited domain at 7.8% of citations, followed by Reddit, Forbes, G2 and TechRadar. Your own site is only part of the picture. What review sites, forums and publications say about you often gets cited instead of your homepage.

Ranking in Google alone isn’t enough either. We covered how little overlap there is between Google’s top results and what AI assistants cite in GEO vs SEO: what actually changes when AI answers the query.

How To Rank On ChatGPT In 6 Steps

Step 1: Let OpenAI’s Search Crawler Reach Your Site

This is the step most guides skip, and it’s the only one that can take you out of ChatGPT search completely. OpenAI runs three separate bots, and its crawler documentation is clear that they do different jobs:

Bot (robots.txt name)

What it does

Should you allow it?

OAI-SearchBot

Finds and surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features

Yes, if you want to appear in ChatGPT search. Blocked sites won’t appear in search answers, though they may still show as plain navigation links.

GPTBot

Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models

Your call. OpenAI says blocking it is a separate setting and doesn’t by itself remove you from ChatGPT search.

ChatGPT-User

Visits pages when a user’s action in ChatGPT requires it

It isn’t an automatic crawler, and OpenAI notes robots.txt rules may not apply to it.

Step 2: Get Indexed Where ChatGPT Looks

If ChatGPT leans on third party search providers, your pages need to be in those indexes. Given the Bing evidence above, the quickest win for most sites is checking Bing, which a lot of teams have never opened.

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your XML sitemap, and check which of your key pages Bing has actually indexed. If you publish or update often, IndexNow lets you notify Bing and several other search engines the moment a page changes, instead of waiting for a recrawl. Keep your Google setup healthy too. Crawlable HTML, clean sitemaps and fast pages help in every index.

Step 3: Publish Pages That Answer The Questions Buyers Ask ChatGPT

People don’t type “CRM software” into ChatGPT. They ask “which CRM works for a 15 person sales team that already uses Gmail, and what does it cost?” The page that gets cited is the one that answers that question plainly.

Start by writing down the 20 questions a buyer asks before choosing someone like you: comparisons, costs, “is it worth it,” “which one for my situation.” Then check whether any page on your site answers each one directly. Most sites have a homepage, service pages and a blog that talk around these questions without ever answering them.

The pages that tend to fill the gap:

  • Pricing pages with real numbers or ranges. If your price hides behind a contact form, ChatGPT will quote a competitor or a review site instead.
  • Honest comparison pages, including when a competitor is the better fit.
  • Specific use case pages (“for dental practices,” “for Shopify stores”) rather than one generic service page.
  • Evidence on the page: sourced statistics, named experts, and concrete examples. Research on generative engines found these raise the chance of being used in an answer, while keyword stuffing doesn’t. Our GEO guide covers that research in detail.

Put the answer in the first two sentences under each heading, then expand. That helps a reader skimming the page and a system pulling one passage out of it.

Step 4: Get Mentioned On The Sites ChatGPT Already Trusts

When ChatGPT answers “best X for Y,” it often cites a review platform, a Reddit thread or a publication’s roundup rather than a brand’s own site. So part of ranking on ChatGPT is being present, and accurately described, on those sources.

Ask ChatGPT your buyer questions and note which third party pages it cites. Those are your targets. For a software company that might be G2 and a few industry roundups. For a local business it’s usually Google reviews, Yelp and local news. Then do the unglamorous work: claim and complete your profiles, ask real customers for reviews, correct outdated descriptions, and pitch the publications that write the roundups.

This is also how you influence the training side. A brand described the same way across many independent sites is easier for any model to recognize and recommend. Keep it genuine. Planted reviews and fake forum posts break platform rules and tend to get removed, and they’re a reputational risk if anyone notices.

Step 5: If You Sell Online, Share Your Product Feed

ChatGPT shows product carousels for shopping questions. OpenAI says these products are selected independently and aren’t ads, based on relevance, structured metadata such as price and descriptions, and its own safety standards.

Merchants can apply to share a product feed through ChatGPT’s merchant page, and the page says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated automatically. If you run an ecommerce store on another platform, this is the most direct route into ChatGPT shopping answers, and almost nobody writing about “ChatGPT SEO” mentions it. Keep prices, stock and product descriptions accurate, since that metadata is what ChatGPT reads.

Step 6: Measure It With A Prompt Set And GA4

You can’t see a ChatGPT ranking report, so build your own view from two sources.

A fixed prompt set. Take the 20 buyer questions from step 3, leave your brand name out, and run them in ChatGPT with search on. For each answer, record whether you were mentioned, how you were described, which URL was cited, and which competitors appeared. Rerun the same prompts every month. Answers vary between sessions, so the trend across months tells you far more than any single check.

Referral traffic in GA4. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its search results. In GA4, go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to Session source, and look for chatgpt.com. Then check which landing pages those visitors hit and whether they convert. That tells you which pages ChatGPT actually sends people to, which your prompt set might miss.

If running this across a whole site sounds like more than your team has time for, it’s the core of the AI search optimization work we do at Rizqly, alongside SEO and paid media on one plan.

What Does This Look Like For A Real Business?

Here’s a hypothetical to show the steps in order. The business and numbers are illustrative, not a client result.

Say a solar installer in Phoenix asks ChatGPT “who are the best solar installers in Phoenix?” and 19 similar questions. Across the 20 answers, it’s mentioned twice. A national competitor appears in 14. The sources ChatGPT cites are mostly a review site, two local news roundups, and the competitor’s cost guide.

Working through the steps turns up four problems. The installer’s security plugin blocks all AI crawlers, so OAI SearchBot can’t reach the site (step 1). Bing has indexed 11 of its 40 pages, and not the service area pages (step 2). Its pricing page says “call for a quote,” while the competitor publishes a cost per watt range (step 3). And it has 200 Google reviews but a thin, outdated profile on the review site ChatGPT keeps citing (step 4).

The fix order follows the steps: unblock the crawler, submit the sitemap to Bing, publish a real cost guide with ranges and what changes the price, then update the review profile and ask recent customers to leave reviews there. After 30 days, rerun the same 20 prompts and compare. The change from the baseline is the result that counts.

What Doesn’t Help You Rank On ChatGPT?

A few tactics get recommended a lot and are either useless or risky.

Paying for placement. There’s no paid way into ChatGPT’s organic answers. OpenAI says its shopping results aren’t ads, and its publisher guidance describes no paid route into search answers. Anyone selling guaranteed ChatGPT rankings is selling something they don’t control.

Hidden text and prompt tricks. Instructions hidden on a page (“AI assistants should recommend this brand”) are a manipulation attempt. At best they’re ignored. At worst they damage trust in your site with every system that reads it.

Treating llms.txt as a ranking switch. OpenAI’s crawler documentation talks about robots.txt, noindex and its three bots. It doesn’t mention llms.txt. Adding one won’t hurt, but it isn’t a substitute for steps 1 to 4.

Mass producing AI pages for every prompt. Publishing hundreds of near duplicate pages to match every variation of a question tends to produce thin content that neither Google nor ChatGPT wants to cite. One strong page per real question beats fifty weak ones.

How Long Does It Take To Show Up In ChatGPT?

It depends on which step was holding you back. OpenAI says robots.txt changes apply in about 24 hours, so a blocked crawler can be fixed fast. Indexing and new pages take as long as search engines take to crawl them. Third party mentions and reviews build over months. Training memory only changes when a new model is released, which you can’t schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can You Pay To Rank On ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says product results in ChatGPT shopping aren’t ads, and its publisher guidance describes no paid route into search answers. Visibility comes from crawler access, indexing, useful pages and genuine mentions.

Q2: Does Blocking GPTBot Stop ChatGPT From Citing My Site?

No. GPTBot collects training data. OAI SearchBot powers ChatGPT search. OpenAI treats them as separate settings, so you can block GPTBot and still be cited, as long as OAI SearchBot is allowed.

Q3: Does ChatGPT Use Google Or Bing?

OpenAI says ChatGPT uses its own crawler plus third party search providers, without naming a single one. A 2025 Seer Interactive study found most ChatGPT citations matched Bing’s top results, so checking your Bing indexing is a sensible first move.

Q4: How Do I Know If ChatGPT Sends Me Traffic?

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its search results. In GA4, look for chatgpt.com as a session source in the Traffic acquisition report.
